Pine Honey

A wonderfully flavoursome honey made from the honeydew of the boreal pine forests of Lithuania.

SKU: ABH-PH01-221 Category: Tags: , ,

This wonderfully flavoursome honey is made from the honeydew of the boreal pine forests of Lithuania. It has a rich, earthy taste and a thick, creamy texture.

Honeydew comes from the sweet secretions of aphids or other plant sap-sucking insects. Honeydew honey is generally dark brown in colour, with a rich fragrance of stewed fruit or fig jam, and is not as sweet as nectar honey.

From late June to mid-July forage options are getting limited in the boreal forests and the bees will likely start collecting honeydew as opposed to flowers.

Great in yoghurt, porridge and on toast, you will love this rich orange-coloured honey.

Tasting Notes

Pine tree honey has a full-bodied yet pleasant flavour that suggests pine sap. This is also one of those honey that makes a perfect and much healthier alternative to table sugar. It is a thick, creamy honey with an earthy, amber-like flavour.

A great detoxifier packed with iron, so great for anaemia. It can also be used for rheumatic pain management.

Rich in oligosaccharides. Pine tree honey is a rich source of oligosaccharides, natural sugar-based compounds with digestive benefits. More exactly, oligosaccharides have a probiotic action, supporting healthy gut flora.

Has many energising and anti-hypoglycemic properties. Honey, including pine honey, is basically sugar but it contains natural, non-refined sugars, primarily fructose and glucose.

Crystallises very slowly. When the fructose content in honey is higher than the glucose content, the resulting honey variety crystallises slowly, as is the case for pine honey and honeydew honey in general. It has been shown that it takes up to 18 months for certain pine honey varieties to crystallise.

Has great antiseptic properties. The antiseptic properties of pine and other honey varieties are a result of the presence of several different components with antimicrobial effects, namely an enzyme from bees called glucose oxidase, the acidic pH and the low moisture content of the honey.

Great for sore throat and respiratory infections. Pine honey is helpful for respiratory tract infections because of its antimicrobial action. Its density and dry stickiness help it stick to the lining of the throat, allowing it to heal and calming inflammation and irritation.

Excellent antioxidant source. Pine tree honey is a rich source of polyphenolic antioxidants, notably flavonoids.

Source of vitamins and dietary minerals. Although found in trace amounts, vitamins and minerals are present in honey, adding to its benefits. Pine honey has been found to contain dietary minerals such as potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and zinc, all of which contribute to the good health of the cardiovascular system, muscles, bones and immune system.

Useful for skin conditions. Pine honey is also used externally for acne treatment in the form of face masks. It is said to improve pores and overall skin appearance, closing pores and giving skin a healthy glow.
